SNOW DAY

Work was canceled today because of last night's snow storm, so I woke up to my first 'professional-life' snow day! I knew going to bed last night that the TCHD offices weren't opening until 10am, but the snow-line recording said to call again in the morning for updates. Lucky me, when I called I found out all offices were closed!! By afternoon it seemed silly that the offices were closed because most of the snow on the streets was melted and only water remained. Plus it was sunny! But this morning it was still pretty bad, so I can see why they closed. And believe me, I'm not complaining! It was a very relaxing day. Along with sleeping in and organizing some stuff for work, I watched The Informant (interesting movie) and cooked dinner with my sweetie.

Back to the grind tomorrow.

Holy Spring Snow Storm!

If you are in the Denver Metro/Front Range area, I advise you - stay inside!

I had to venture out tonight (in order to get to my home), and what is usually a 20 minute drive took about 50 minutes. I didn't get above 30 mph once, and I was fishtailing and sliding all over the place. Snow is blowing sideways, drifts are forming, and the roads are icy and slick. I saw at least 20 cars on the side and in the middle of roads, facing all different directions and struggling to make it up hills. The radio reported that basically every major highway and interstate in the surrounding area had either standstill traffic due to crashes and stalled vehicles or was completely shut down due to accumulating snow and stranded drivers. It is absolutely insane out there. I can only thank the good Lord that the plows passed down the street I was taking home right before I drove on them. And I mean literally right before I drove them; I was waiting at the light to turn and they passed by me down the road.

Now I am cozy in my apartment, and I can pray the office will be closed tomorrow. After all, the winter storm advisory doesn't lift until 6pm tomorrow evening.

Window Shopping

I cannot wait for a beautiful warm sunny Saturday!! Just listen to what I discovered about historic downtown Littleton, CO this evening on a walk, and you'll understand why...

It is packed full of cute little shops, eateries, and activities! In no particular order, although some definitely excite me more than others, here are some of the places I hope to visit soon (next time I'll make sure they're open!).

~ Multiple gift/antique stores. Looking through the windows they are stuffed full of goodies and little treasures. One lady (I assume owner) was moving furniture around, although closed, and let me walk through her store real quick. It had that perfect antique store smell. I can't wait to venture back in there.

~ A couple spice stores. That's right - a store full of spices and accessories/gadgets for storing and using spices and herbs.

~ Lola's Sugar Rush. This is the most adorable old-fashioned candy shoppe (<-- spelled that way in one of the windows) I may have ever seen. It was painted in a light pink and brown color palate and I may not be able to wait long until I meander back there.

~ Multiple eateries, some fancy others casual. One in particular has a rooftop patio that I am going to test out as soon as the weather warms and it opens up for business.

~ Katie's Wine Bar. I didn't go in this place, but it's in this cute little white brick building that looks like it could be a two-story apartment in a hip downtown location (it probably was at one time). There are little windows on either side of the door, both of which allowed views of guests at a small table sipping on wine. It looked like a picture out of a movie, and the place just had a grand-reopening so I'm guessing it's nice inside.

~Hot Pots! This is quite possibly what I'm most excited about. It's a "paint your own pottery" studio!! I saw all sorts of kitchen items that could be painted, such as a butter dish or tea mug. And there was a mosaic in the window that spelled "mosaics" so I'm assuming you can make mosaics here too. I am absolutely thrilled there is one of these establishments so close to my home. I've been wanting to do one of these for quite a while, so you can only imagine my excitement.

Doesn't all that sound wonderful?! I can just imagine starting my day off with some artistic creativity at Hot Pots, then heading over to the rooftop patio for lunch before satisfying my sweet tooth at Lola's and antique shopping all afternoon. Of course I would also enjoy a glass of fine wine at Katie's Wine Bar before calling it a day. Ahhh...someday soon that will happen.

(Hurry back to Colorado Mom! And bring Gina. We could make it a girls' weekend. And while we're day-dreaming, let's make it a "first-weekend-of-the-month" so we can go to the Denver Art Museum for free on Sunday. Sound like a plan? Good.)

Warmth and Light

Today as I was leaving work at 5 o' clock, the sun was still hanging high in the western sky above the mountains. Dusk didn't start to set in until 6 o' clock, and Sunday we change the clocks. I can almost feel the extra warmth and sunshine. Longer days, here we come!!!

Fit For the Gods

It is said that the people who first came upon what is now called The Garden of the Gods, in Colorado Springs, had the following thoughts:

One man, observing the surrounding beauty, thought the area would one day make a wonderful beer garden. A second man, in reply, said it was a place fit for the gods. Thus the name - Garden of the Gods.

My dad and I (and one of his friends from church) recently visited the park on the final day of their week-long "man trip" to Colorado (two other church friends were with them most of the week). Luckily, I had the whole week off (I don't start my job until tomorrow) so I was able to spend quite a lot of time with them. Not only did we visit The Garden of the Gods, but we also took a day trip to Leadville, CO, a historic mining town and also the highest city in the United States of America -- at 10,200 ft above sea level -- on the days we weren't hitting the snowy slopes. I must say, the mountain views from Leadville are pretty spectacular; they include the two tallest mountains in Colorado, Mt. Massive (14,421 ft) and Mt. Elbert (14443 ft). Mt. Elbert is actually the tallest mountain in the Rocky Mountains of North America, and is the second tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, after Mt. Whitney in California, which is 62 ft taller. All this to say, it's
big... and beautiful. Really, if you ask me, all of Colorado is a place fit for the gods.

And if I knew how to get pictures off my phone I would have pictures of the snowy Rocky Mountains in all their beauty and glory, but I don't. So all you get to see are the pictures from The Garden of the Gods.

Overwhelmed

Sometimes I get so overwhelmed by my beautiful blessed life, all I know to do is cry.

Do you ever feel that way?

Bad Timing

Remember that blog entry about the frustrations DMVs cause me (and most of the public I'm sure)? Well they did it again. Today I went back to the DMV with my emissions test verification in hand to renew my plates and registration. All was going smoothly, but then the employee told me how much it would cost, I handed her my debit card, and she looked at me with this knowing expression and said, "Our card machine isn't working today." Of course it isn't! And I didn't have any checks or enough cash with me. She kind of looked at me like I was crazy for not having any checks with me, at which point I wanted to tell her no one uses checks on regular basis anymore and they were supposed to be able to take credit cards. You'd think they would mention that little tidbit of information before they started doing all the paperwork. Anyway, I guess it turned out fine because they have an ATM on location, so I just went and withdrew some money (although I did get charged an extra $1 because it wasn't a Chase machine). I'm just glad I don't have to go back there for another year.

In other news, I came down with a pretty nasty cold Tuesday evening. It's astonishing how quickly sickness can come upon you. I was feeling great all day Tuesday; I spent the whole day skiing with my dad and some of his friends. Then after showering and taking a nap that afternoon I woke up feeling awful. So much for enjoying this beautiful weather and making the most of my last week of freedom before I start my 8-5 routine. I just hope I'm feeling better by Monday.
