Playing Catch Up...Once Again.

I think this is easily the longest stretch of time I've gone without posting at least a small something. So for that I apologize. Let's catch up to speed so I can write about my most recent adventure.

First there was the ski weekend in February when about 15 of my friends all gathered together for some snow activities and shenanigans in Summit County:

The next weekend my friend from college, who I hadn't seen since we graduated, came to visit. We went to a hockey game (or what was left of it once her delayed flight got in), some wineries & breweries in Boulder the next day, and then breakfast and paint-your-own pottery on Sunday before she left.

The next weekend I celebrated my 26th birthday...

 ...complete with a giant balloon!

And a trip to the Melting Pot for dinner (which was also to celebrate our anniversary and Valentine's Day, since they all fall within exactly a week of each other).

The next weekend my parents came out for a week vacay in the mountains, so I spent some time with them and my brother.

The next week, we rang in Rachel's birthday with a concert in Denver.

On St. Patty's Day my best friend got engaged!

At the end of April I went home for a wedding (and met Abe Lincoln!).

Over Memorial Day I went backpacking for the first time of the season.

Then I went to Guatemala, which I'll post about soon. But the week after I got back, my parents came out for a week of summer fun in Beaver Creek, CO!

And most recently, I went backpacking last weekend in Rocky Mountain National Park. We saw a bull moose, and I made a friend with a  chipmunk.

So those are the highlights from my past 5-1/2 months. In between, I've been catching some rays at the pool, wandering art festivals, attending Rockies games, playing kickball, and enjoying Denver at it's dry, hot best. :o) How's your summer been so far?!

P.S. Don't forget to check back soon for stories and pictures from Guatemala!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Let's keep the good times rolling.

The very next weekend, the one after the Broncos game, I had a couple friends in town for the weekend. It's quite interesting how the four of us are connected. Get a load of this... Jen (the one in white) and I know each other from church; we go way back to childhood, although we never really became friends until we were a little older and went to school together. Kinsey (the one in blue & purple) knows Jen and I from our school years; like middle-school through graduation. Then Jen and Kinsey went on to college at U of I, and became friends and roommates with Jane (the one in light blue). I met Jane, completely independently mind you, working at a summer mission program called Appalachia Service Project. I believe we met the summer before the three became roommates, and ironically, it was Jen who had told Jane about ASP and encouraged her to apply. Jen knew about ASP because we had volunteered for the program in high school through our church youth group. So there you have it, the it's-a-small-world version of how we all met and became friends.

Fast forward to now... Jen and I live in the same city again, Denver, Kinsey lives only a few hours away, and Jane happened to be in town for a job interview. So we decided to make a weekend of her visit and go skiing. It was fun to have a weekend with the girls and catch up on what's going on in everyone's lives. Not to mention it was just a relaxing weekend.

Instead of getting up at the crack of dawn to beat local traffic to the ski resorts, we took our sweet time. Starting with breakfast and coffee at Panera around 8:30, we got on the road to the mountain around 9:30am. Then we still had to get rentals for 2 of them and go to the grocery store for some food for lunch. This is the much more economical way to eat at a ski resort.

I'd estimate we got to the mountain, had our gear on, and were finally in line for the lift around noon. Then we took a whopping 3 runs before we went in for water and lunch. Plus some were having a hard time adjusting to the altitude, and once again, the point of the weekend was to be together not see how many runs we could get in. We only took a few more runs before we decided to call it a day. It was windy, cold, and snowing pretty hard (as it had been all day), and we were a little concerned about the drive back.

Speaking of the drive back, it sucked. Scuze my language. I believe it took a total of 3 hours to make the typically 1.5hr drive. I don't think it was sheer volume causing the slow down because it really didn't seem to be that busy, so I'm blaming the snow, which is probably a pretty good guess if I do say so myself. Good think we were in good company. The conversation and thought-provoking discussion helped to pass the time, and we were in Denver before I knew it.

Since the drive delayed our arrival back to town, we ended up calling it a night and cozied up on the couch for more "girl-talk." I do have to say, I really miss spending quality time with my girlfriends, so that is a goal of mine for this new year. More on that in a future post though...

The next day was just as fun, although entirely different. We woke up without any plan except to get breakfast. We went to a local diner called Dozens, and it was delicious! They seem to focus on local and wholesome food, as much as possible. Mmm, mmm. Afterward we went to Cherry Creek shopping center and wandered the streets and cute shops. I found one shop that I adore! It filled me with tons of inspiration for cute DIY and art projects. I can't wait to start one! Although, I should probably finish the few that I have started around my apartment first.

We all went our separate ways around 2:00, and I headed home to clean up, go through mail, and get ready for the week. Wah, way; I won't bore you with details. Check out the very few pictures we took from the weekend!

Christmas in Illinois

No white Christmas this year. But fun all the same. It was a nice week home: spending time with family (and those like family), visiting friends, eating delicious food, and enjoying some rare mid-western winter sunshine. What a treat!

Sorry, Again, For My Absence

I've been a pretty busy lady since late July, which was essentially my last substantial post. Here's a brief summary picking up where I left off.

The weekend after my triathlon, I...
Went to Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo and a Zac Brown Band Concert (amaaazing!) with some of my favorites...

And the following day I went tubing down the Cache La Poudre River with those same favorites, on a crazy impulse. That was an adventure!
(If you want more details, ask me.)

In August, I...
Went to a Rockies game or two...

Said good-bye to a great friend and co-worker who moved back home...

And enjoyed the last days of summer's delicious bounty...

In September, I...
Went backpacking with my brother, Rachel, and Donnie for a long weekend.

{we made a couple friends}

Met Chris Cagel at the Grizzly Rose...no big deal!

Went camping near Spinny Reservoir and the Dream Stream, as it's known by fishermen (and women).

Went to Breckenridge's Oktoberfest street party. It's rained on our parade (literally, although there was no actual parade). Everyone managed to have a good time anyway, and I've never heard grown adults literally cheer for sunshine...until that day. We enjoyed a mug or 2 of good beer, some "Bavarian" food, and good times.

And I presented a poster session at Public Health in the Rockies annual conference.

In October, I...
Took Jessie to Colorado Springs for her first visit ever. We went to Garden of the Gods where we broke some rules...

and made some memories....

Then we went to Manitou Springs to taste the spring water...

and ride over-sized fake bicycles.

From there we proceeded to my cousin's house for their annual Oktoberfest celebration (sorry, no pictures).

Went to a corn maze, which was surprisingly challenging, and picked out a pumpkin from the patch. Proceeded to carve said pumpkin with a group of some favorite friends, while watching Hocus Pocus, I might add. Can't forget this - baked and ate some pumpkin seeds!

Made and enjoyed some amazing whipped pumpkin dip. Do yourself a favor and make this. It will rock your world. (15oz pumpkin, 1 5oz package prepared instant vanilla pudding, 1 16oz container fat-free whipped cream, 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice - mix all together and use as dip on whatever sounds good to you; I prefer apples.)

And in November,
I spent Thanksgiving at home with most of my family, and celebrated a wedding in Chicago with some of my favorite people!

In December, it is back to reality for a few short weeks before I get another week off to spend with friends and family at home. Then in the new year the fun really begins! Stay tuned!!
